Working with the community in Jayuya, Puerto Rico, Rossi + Lugo took charge of the green renovation and extension of their high school. When designing the space, we took into account the wealth of clean water offered to our island communities every year in the form of rain – the school collects and recycles rainwater, and this process provides teaching moments for teachers year round. Murals by some of Puerto Rico’s leading public artists invite students to wonder at and question their environment, and grounds designed for gardening provide them with the opportunity to grow local plants – and themselves.
